Trapped by the Ice!
When you’re in cold places, you may have to use and deal with ice. Ice can sometimes be effective or other times it can be hazardous. When you confront ice, you can make it useful by making it beneficial for the situation you’re in. Some reasons why it can help are: you can melt the ice and use it as drinking water, store food and drinks so they don’t go rancid quickly, or use it as a medicine to relieve swelling and pain, but not for too long on your skin. Unfortunately, in some cases ice will cause damage. For example, it can hurt you if you slip and fall by getting a cut or a broken bone, it can cause frostbite, or it can block passages for walking or boats.
“May 20th, 1916
Dear diary: Today is the day they rescued me from the freezing continent of Antarctica. When I saw the light and heard the sound of the big ship coming toward us, I could not believe my eyes. At that moment I was terribly hungry and thirsty because I had not eaten hardly anything for days. My heart was pounding with excitement. Thirty minutes later after I saw the ship, I felt a warm blanket on my back. One of the sailors had placed it on me. I felt excited, relieved, warm, happy, grateful, and saved. This was one of the best days of my life!”
